DRAWING
This portrait was drawn from a video when the child looked at me, and seemed simultaneously happy to be playing outside, and sad knowing the play date was soon to end.

A spring day spent with the youth of Brooklyn’s Bushwick Houses, Young Nysia (and a friend) were outside in the middle of the baseball field dancing around and playing with my dog. This image was taken from a video I have of a very sincere moment when the child seemed simultaneously happy to be playing and sad for the play date to end. The child’s mother had just called out, and a look of grief had come over the child’s face, but a genuine smile of gratitude quickly emerged to reassure me that it was still a good day.
It was important that I create this portrait using a humble, sincere, and timeless medium such as pencil to illustrate the maturity in Nysia’s eyes and facial expression.
